How to safely negotiate junctions and roundabouts when cycling

There is a chilling statistic that says that 40% of Cycling accidents and fatalities happen at road junctions! Unfortunately there isn’t a breakdown of who was at fault, but it is clear that everyone should be at their most attentive when negotiating junctions!

There are some basic rules about safely negotiating junctions and roundabouts:

  • Always visually check and signal before making any direction changes
  • Where possible try to make eye contact with the driver; it helps them to remember that you are human
  • Place yourself in the correct lane for your manoeuvre so that you ride with the traffic flow
  • Check and signal before you return to your default position on the road
